My favourite Western of all times:

Silverado

This movie was just so cool. It had all the elements of a classic western and plenty of laughs to boot. It was also helped by having a huge cast of big names.

If you want to see more of the Silverado characters in action, then check out my novelette “The Case of the Cattle rustlers”.

My favourite Horror of all times:

Dawn of the Dead

(the George A Romera classic from the 70s)

People look at the Twilight movies and complain because “vampires don’t sparkle!” Well I’m like that with zombie movies, but I say “Zombies don’t run!” That’s right! A real zombie is ponderously show, but they’re scarey because you can see them coming, lumbering towards you and they can ambush you or swamp you in huge numbers. Running zombies are a blur and you don’t really get a chance to be terrified because you don’t get a good look at them and they are way too much like humans. The 70s original is the quintessential zombie movie by which all others should be judged. George A Romera was adeptly able to manipulate our emotions as we sat through this awesome movie.

My favourite Comedy of all times:

Life of Brian

Monty Python rules! This movie was pretty much hilarious all the way through and it was cool to see the Monty Python crew playing multiple roles. Contrary to what the Christians claim, it never made fun of Jesus. However, I can see it did point out that humans are a very gullible lot. Perhaps that’s what really irritated those Christians? ;)

My favourite Thriller of all times:

Reservoir Dogs

In my mind this is still Quentin Tarrentino’s greatest movie. A great cast and a great concept. Brilliant characterization and plenty of shock value.

My favourite War movie of all times:

Platoon

One of the few movies from that era that I felt really deserved it’s academy awards. What a fantastic movie and an awesome cast too.

My favourite Sci Fi of all times:

 A Clockwork Orange

This Stanley Kubrick classic was very controversial at the time and still has plenty of shock value even today. When I first saw it, I didn’t think much of it as it wasn’t quite what I expected. But there was just something about it that stuck in my mind years after. So one day I decided I should give it another chance just to try to figure out why it had made left an impression on me. It was then that I truly appreciated just how brilliant it was and now it’s on my top 10 list of all time favourite movies.

The book's pretty good too.

My favourite comedy duo of all times:

Bud Spencer and Terence Hill

I always have fond memories of going with my Dad to see the latest Bud Spencer and Terence Hill movie. They were two Italian actors who did comedy movies, but started out doing spaghetti westerns in the 60s. They had the most entertaining fight scenes you’ve ever seen. Bud was the big strong guy while Terence was the smart ass, fast guy. Their battles against bad guys were legendary in my mind, taking on swarms of bad guys all at once and not even having to use the martial arts. Their best movie was without a doubt “Watch out we’re mad”.  RIP Bud Spencer. :(

Check out my special tribute to these guys here.

My favourite horror character of all times:

Freddie Kruger

Robert Englund's version of course!

I still remember well sitting in the movie theatre watching the original “nightmare on Elm Street” for the first time. There had been nothing like it before and every minute or so, the women in the chairs around me screamed, making me nearly leap from my chair in fright. These days it probably wouldn’t have that effect, even on those who’ve never seen it before, because there’s so many movies these days which are so much more gristly, but back in the 80s it was the cutting edge of horror and Freddie was the scariest horror villain around.

My favourite actor:

Steve Buscemi

Ever since I saw Reservoir Dogs, I became a fan of Buscemi and will watch any movie he appears in. ( love the type of smart ass, sarcastic characters he plays.) He’s was considered the King of the Indies there at one point, choosing to star in indie films rather than big block busters. Great to see him in the hit TV show, Boardwalk Empire.

My favourite actress:

Missi Pyle

A unique looking and beautiful woman who's great at playing psychos. She first made an impression of me in "Charlie and the chocolate factory" as Violet Beauregarde's mother.
